ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Scouts Greater St. Louis Area Council is turning this year's total solar eclipse into a weekend long event with hikes, camping, and cook-outs.

Mark (an Eagle Scout) and Stephanie Hampton along with their daughter Julia a scout with Pack 809 in Creve Coeur joined Total Information A.M. Thursday to discuss the various activities that are taking place to celebrate the eclipse.

"They're planning a bunch of STEM activities, a campfire program, an Amazing Race with all the scouts," said Stephanie Hampton. "(Our family) is going to (S- F Scout Ranch), so they're going to be competition, climbing and paddling, badge workshops. Leading up to the event, it's going to be fun tracking the moon and prepping for this amazing event."

For the Hamptons, they say they are excited to have their daughter Julia be old enough to experience one as a Scout. Julia was roughly four-months old when the last eclipse happened back in 2017.

"Now being able to experience it as a scout, surrounded by other scouts and their families is going to be really fun," said Stephanie.

Julia Hampton says she is going to enjoy camping and will especially enjoy making smores during the weekend leading up to the event.

Mark Hampton, who is an Eagle Scout along with his father and his older brother, says he's happy to be able have his daughter a part of Scouts of America to do these celebrations with him.

"Now that I'm grown up, it's great to see my kids, now that we got four girls being able to be a part of (Scouts of America) too," said Mark Hampton. "About 10 Years ago, Boy Scouts said they were going to allow girls to join too and now they call it Scouting and this is great with all these girls in the house, we got a lot of family activities we can all share together."
