Sunday will mark 75 years of Scouts placing flags on graves at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary in south Saint Louis County. It's part of their Memorial Weekend "Good Turn."
"We invite any Scouting families or organizations such as VFWs, American Legions that would like to help," said Ken Wolff, a district executive with Scouting America. "We are open to walk ups. We meet at 10:30 at the VA Hospital orange lot on Sunday morning."
They have about 200,000 flags to place on headstones. A flag-raising ceremony will take place at noon, prior to the placement.
Wolff said the event teaches a sense of citizenship for our Scouts and provides a learning opportunity.
"You name whatever conflict and there are people there and those kids are like, oh, what was that?" he said. "They're reading the headstones, reading the memorial sites, and I've seen many a youth say, 'I wanna learn more about that.'"
