ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Ameren Missouri has announced plans to build a new distribution substation at Delmar and Union. But Karla May, the state Senator representing parts of St. Louis including Delmar and Union, has concerns.
Senator May says residents have been asking her questions about how the substation will affect their property values, its aesthetics, and if it will match the surrounding areas.
"The community is concerned, so Ameren needs to calm the community by bringing them some renderings of what they are trying to do, hold some community meetings to help them understand the need for it in the community," she said.
KMOX asked Ameren Missouri for a comment and they released a statement. The company said it bought the property to ensure energy was reliable in the community as it continues to grow.
"Our intent is to build a state-of-the-art substation that supports ongoing and future developments including residential upgrades. We are beginning the permitting process to make this happen. We have an extensive due diligence process when searching for potential property. As a part of this process, Ameren Missouri evaluated numerous locations before purchasing this land."
Ameren's statement continued, saying they've been speaking -- and will continue speaking -- with community and city leaders about their intentions for the property.
Senator May will hold an informational community meeting this Thursday evening at 6:30 at the Residences at Delmar DivINe. She hopes Ameren Missouri will take part in the forum.
