ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A Missouri Senate bill that would rename part of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in St. Louis to "Captain David Dorn Memorial Highway" unanimously passed the State Senate on Thursday.

The new name would be in honor of the retired St. Louis Police Captain who was killed by a looter outside a pawnshop in north St. Louis during night of violent crime. Capt. David Dorn was guarding Lee's Pawn & Jewelry, which is owned by a friend of his, when he was shot and killed last June.

Senate Bill 520 is sponsored by State Senator Steven Roberts of St. Louis.

It would rename approximately one block of Dr. MLK Drive – also known as State Highway 180 – from North Sarah Street to Belle Glade Avenue to "Captain David Dorn Memorial Highway." It would cover the location of the pawnshop where Dorn was killed.

"The department of transportation shall erect and maintain appropriate signs designating such highway, with the costs to be paid by private donations," the bill states.

The bill next heads to the Missouri House where it's considered likely for final passage.
