FESTUS, MO (KMOX) - An officer involved shooting in Festus leaves one man dead and the deputies and detectives involved, on paid administrative leave.

Jefferson County spokesman Grant Bissell says the deceased made terrorist threats against the Jefferson County Court house last week. The Sheriff's department was trying to take him into custody for admission to a mental health facility.

Bissell says "the man allegedly grabbed a hammer and was acting aggressively and threatening toward the officers who there trying to arrest him. They initially attempted less lethal use of force by deploying a taser, the taser was not effective."

Bissell says the man continued to be aggressive and threatening the deputies. "At that point, one or more of the deputies fired on the subject and he was pronounced dead at the scene."

Bissell says since Friday, there was a plan to get the man into a mental health care facility.
