ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - A significant percentage of US military personnel say they're not getting the COVID vaccine.

They're not required to.

KMOX Legal Analyst Brad Young says the armed forces cannot mandate troops get vaccinated for COVID because none have received full FDA approval. "If you look at some of the major vaccinations right now, those have only received emergency approval, not standard approval by the FDA. So at the present time the military cannot require troops to receive a vaccination, because those vaccines have not received a standard FDA approval."

Young says when COVID vaccines do attain full approval, the military could require it.

The latest surveys show anywhere between a third and one half of troops are declining the vaccine.
