ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- Square confirms it has temporarily closed its newly redeveloped downtown office building after a deadly shooting at an adjacent homeless encampment.

Police swarmed the tent city at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday after a man in his mid-thirties was shot and killed. Police have yet to identify him. A source in unhoused ministry says the man was known by the nickname of "Street."

KMOX News confirms Square Inc. closed its brand new offices inside the historic Post-Dispatch building on Tucker Blvd. on a temporary basis Monday and Tuesday. We understand the office remains temporarily closed.

The mobile payments firm was founded by St. Louisans who had to build it in San Francisco because the tech infrastructure didn't exist here at the time.

It was a major milestone when they decided to open a St. Louis presence, first doing so in various locations in the Cortex Innovation District before announcing ambitious plans for downtown.

Their vision included reorienting the building's entrance to face north.

As of late Tuesday, there were still a few tents remaining on the plaza, which is located between Square and the St. Patrick's Center.

Mayor Tishuara Jones' office said last month, prior to Square's move-in, that they'd hoped to relocate the campers to a different location.
