ST. CHARLES, MO (KMOX) - A plan to bring in more bars along historic Main Street in St. Charles is facing opposition from other businesses.

Chris Goellner of Goellner Printing on Main Street says the city can barely manage the drinking crowds now, "they can't get control with the rules that are in place right now and if we loosen the reins it's just going to add to the madness. It's too much pressure on our police force right now."
Randy Schilling owns several buildings around the old post office on Main Street. He says more bars will mean more problems, "in this past two months we had a guy down here shoot up a half dozen buildings, we have vandalism, we have fights in the street late at night."
The plan before the city counsel would drop the current rule that says businesses with liquor licenses have to make half their revenue from food sales. It's supported by St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer who says it would be good for development and can be done without hurting the neighborhood.
The measure is expected to come up for a vote in a couple of weeks.
