ST. CLAIR, Ill (KMOX) -- St. Clair County has taken down its government website after apparently getting hacked by a ransomware group.

The group claiming responsibility calls itself "Grief". It says it has about 2.5 GB of data from the County's servers. The Belleville News-Democrat reports it's demanding payment in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Monero.

Grief also is threatening to release its stolen data step-by-step, which it claims includes internal documents and personal information.

St. Clair County is not confirming or denying the ransomware attack but it is advising people to call the switchboard if they need service. That number is 618-277-6600.
