The St. Louis City Department of Health has confirmed they are trying to find multiple monkeys that are on the loose near the O'Fallon Park neighborhood, after being first reported Thursday afternoon. Environmental Health Bureau Chief Justen Hauser says capturing the monkeys will require outside help.

"We have engaged with multiple partner agencies, so that once the location of the monkeys is confirmed those agencies that are properly trained and equipped can work to capture the monkeys."

Hauser says they have received calls from numerous witnesses, including one member of law enforcement. They have also been sent photos of the monkeys, and worked with the St. Louis Zoo to identify them.

"They have been identified as vervet monkeys," says Hauser, adding "they are very intelligent but can be unpredictable at times."

Hauser adds nobody has contacted them to claim ownership of the monkey.

"We don't know where the animals came from. Owning an exotic animal like a primate is prohibited by City ordinance."

Hauser says anyone who spots the monkey should not approach or try to catch the primates themselves. He instead asks you call animal control at 315-657-1500.
