St. Louis Board of Aldermen votes to ban open carry of guns

The St. Louis Board of Aldermen has given final approval today to a bill that bans the open carrying of guns.

Only people with a concealed carry permit will be legally allowed to have firearms. Juveniles cannot.

The bill passed by a unanimous vote of 14-0. It now goes to Mayor Tishaura Jones desk. In response, the Mayor's office issued this statement: "We are reviewing this legislation as well as any safety or operational concerns it could pose to the public and officers. We continue to explore every avenue to implement effective commonsense gun safety laws in St. Louis despite the state’s strict preemption laws."

Also passing, a measure requiring officers to clearly inform people of their rights during a consent search. Alderman Rasheen Aldridge. "I think this is a huge step of just ensuring that people know their rights and when it comes to consent searches I think it's critical that people know they have the ability not to allow that search to happen."

The bill also requires police to hand out business cards during searches or stops that don't lead to arrests.
