ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The 77th annual Tony Awards took place last week and Broadway has had some St. Louis-flavor for the last month now.
'Water for Elephants' was among the musicals that was a nominee at the Tony Awards last week, having seven nominations which included best musical, best costume design and best choreography.
The cast for the musical, which starred 'The Flash' and 'Glee' star Grant Gustin, features a St. Louisan in Keaton Hentoff-Killian.
Hentoff-Killian graduated in 2012 from Circus Harmony, the social circus school at the City Museum. Hentoff-Killian's mother Jessica Hentoff is the founder of Circus Harmony.
"My mother does Circus Harmony for kids," said Hentoff-Killian to KMOX's Debbie Monterrey on KMOX's Total Information A.M. "My sister went into traditional circus, my little brother went into more Cabaret character-based world and I ended up in contemporary. Even though we all got an opportunity in the world, we each got a great opportunity to follow our own thread of what circus means to us."
Since graduating, he moved to work in Australia for seven years, where he got to travel around the world, including to South America and Europe.
"Really any place you name it, I've probably been there or close by," said Hentoff-Killian. "I was working there until I got the call to do this project on Broadway."
Hentoff-Killian says he doesn't know how they found him to become member of the cast in the musical, but he did say he had relationships with some members and previously did meet with a key member of the creative staff while in circus school.
"I had met (Co-Choreographer and circus designer) Shana Carroll while I was still in Circus School, but that was eight years prior," said Hentoff-Killian. "I was still living in Australia and I got a call from (Carroll) it was a shock that she still knew I existed."
You can catch Hentoff-Killian perform on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. Tickets for the show can be found at the musical's website. The show is currently selling tickets until February 2025 at the moment.
