ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - Developers and residents have long complained about the complicated zoning process in the City of St. Louis. What's wrong with it? "Where do we start?," says St. Louis City Zoning Administrator, Mary Hart Burton, "it is quite old, there have been a lot of patches over the years. But the root of the zoning code dates back to the 1950's. So written at an entirely different time for a city with a different set of goals."
The city is launching a months-long process of upgrading its land use regulations. It's called the St. Louis City Zoning Upgrade.
St. Louis Zoning Administrator, Mary Hart Burton, says the current code is decades old and complicated to navigate. "I think the main goal is for everyone from the developer who wants to do 200+ units, to the citizen who just wants to replace their back porch, to be able to pick up the code and follow it and have some security in knowing that they understand the code and they can do it without multiple trips to City Hall or multiple hearings that hold it up."
The city is currently forming a community advisory committee.
A complete draft is expected at the end of next summer.
There is an Open House Wednesday, September 3rd at the Forest Park Visitors Center. Doors open at 5 pm.
