ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) - The St. Louis County Council voted in favor of decriminalizing recreational marijuana possession on Tuesday night. It will change the penalty for anyone found with less than 35 grams of weed to just a fine of no more than $100.
The penalty is currently a fine of no more than $1,000, or one year in jail, or both. The legislation is now moved to the desk of St. Louis County Executive Sam Page, where he is expected to sign it.
The vote was 6-1, on the bill sponsored by former St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch. The only "no" vote came from Councilman Erie Trakas who says marijuana is a "gateway drug" and believes it leads to the use of more dangerous drugs.
In a tweet earlier this month, Fitch says they'll be setting up a drug court in the County to handle these cases:
