In the midst of their budget shortfall, St. Louis County is pushing the onus (and costs) of repairing their roads onto the municipalities they pass through.
A letter from County Executive Sam Page, shared by St. Ann Mayor Amy Poelker, says Page is presenting the option to the Council of returning the responsibility of maintaining over 80 County Roads to various cities.
Mayor Poelker says they only have a small stretch of Cypress road that passes through St. Ann and shares the estimated cost if they had to fully repair it.
"I'm going to guess maybe that small section and if we ever had to fix it it would cost maybe $300,000?"
Kirkwood Mayor Liz Gibbons says they would have a hard time maintaining their County roads.
"I can't see how we can. I mean, both of the county roads the county has in Kirkwood are long big roads." Gibbons says they are still awaiting repairs to Big Bend for nearly a decade.
Page says with this move the County can better focus on unincorporated roads and public safety.
