The popular lake where the elk and other wildlife sip water along the shore sprung a leak last May. The man-made lake lies over a porous gravel subsurface covered with clay.

St. Louis County Parks Department spokesman Kristen Bryant says they plan to pour a slurry of concrete down the hole. "The repairs should actually happen within the next couple of weeks. The contractor is ready to go, but just kind of waiting for a few consecutive days of warmer weather."

The planned repair will cost taxpayers about $36,000. A more ambitious plan to put a plastic liner on much of the lake bed was rejected because it would have cost $180,000.
