ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - In downtown, St. Louis firefighters let a young woman hold the hose and put out a small fire smoldering in the mulch of a flower bed in the middle of Tucker Boulevard.
Amateur firefighter Jennifer Griffith flagged them down to report a flowerbed mulch fire at Tucker Boulevard and Chestnut Street. So as a form of "community outreach," she got to put out the fire herself.
"Putting out fires. Saving my city. Doing what I can," Griffith said. "Because I reported it before everyone else they provided me with a opportunity."
Firefighter James Sutherlin says with the hot, dry weather these little fires are popping up. The fire department is asking motorists not to throw cigarette butts in the mulch because they've had several fires around downtown in recent days.
