The latest numbers show thousands of children who were born in St. Louis City have left.
Twenty-one thousand children, under age 15, who were born in the city since the year 2020, are missing from the latest population estimates as their families have moved out.
Demographer Ness Sandoval, a Sociology professor at Saint Louis University, compares that to Austin, Texas.
"Because Austin is smaller than St. Louis region by about 200,000 but there are more children born in Austin to date than the St. Louis region. And they have, in the key demographic between 3- and 40, there are more residents in Austin in that key demographic that St. Louis."
"And so even though we are larger, Austin is a lot younger and they have tremendous population momentum to grow and they're going to be larger than us in 4 or 5 years."
Sandoval says the St. Louis population has lost 21,000 children under the age of 15 in just the past five years as families have moved out.
