Mayor talks guns, federal funding during first State of the City Address

SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - "We're still testing out which levers to pull," says St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones, telling those assembled for her first State of the City Address, "Black girl magic doesn't come with a wand. We cannot fix decades of old problems overnight or even in one year."

The Mayor delivered the speech from Harris Stowe State University. She opened by talking about her grandparents' experience raising a family in St. Louis, her childhood in the city, and then to her own teenage son, and her concerns that he live in a safe community full of opportunity. "He thinks that it's pretty embarrassing that I check up on him so often," Jones explained.

The Mayor says half a billion dollars in federal relief money gives the City the chance to do things never done before. She has proposed establishing an Office for Violence Prevention, to coordinate resources. She's also calling for a 3% raise for City workers to help recruit and retain employees.
