SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - A Facebook post last week caught our attention. It included a picture of a large restroom stall, with disposable changing pads on the floor. You can see part of a specialty wheelchair in the frame.
The post says: "There’s NO dignity in laying my adult son on the floor to be changed or toileted. Would you be okay if you had to do this for your child? Parent? Spouse? Loved one??Public spaces need changing spaces for ADULTS & children. Fun fact - babies and adults can use the SAME changing tables.
This needs be mandated in public spaces not only in St. Louis & Missouri, but nationwide, at minimum."
Tamico Jones' 21 year old son relies on a wheelchair. He is able to use a toilet with assistance, but sometimes when they are away from home, he needs to be changed. "We often are reduced to having to lay him on a floor. There's no dignity in that. It's also extremely unsanitary."
Jones points out, many public restrooms stalls are open at the bottom, leaving him very little privacy.
Jones has launched a group called RAGE - Raising Advocacy and Generating Equality - hoping to generate support for local or state legislation requiring adult changing tables in public restrooms.
She says while there is a cost to install adult changing tables, the disability community would pay it back by frequenting locations with those accommodations. Jones says they frequently attend St. Louis CITY SC games, because Energizer Stadium has an adult changing facility.
