The new study from WalletHub ranked St. Louis at No. 20 on the list, ahead of big towns like Los Angeles (21), Philadelphia (23), Nashville (27) and Dallas (36). The high ranking for St. Louis can be attributed to its number of local bars and restaurants, festivals and fitness centers.

A couple of other Missouri towns also made the list, with Kansas City at No. 56 and Springfield at No. 81.

The study judged more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities in 65 key metrics, keeping in mind the number and variety of fun yet cost-effective options.

Here's where St. Louis ranked in some of the study's main categories:
18th – Festivals per Capita
10th – Restaurants per Capita
66th – Playgrounds per Capita
8th – Bar Accessibility
66th – Parkland Acres per Capita
21st – Fitness Centers per Capita
31st – Dance Clubs per Capita
28th – Number of Attractions
68th – Avg. Beer Price
34th – Movie Cost

Having fun in the U.S. can be expensive, as the the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average American spends over $2,900 on entertainment per year.

Thankfully for St. Louisians, there's a 100% free zoo, many parks open to the public and opportunities to see shows in The Muny's free seats.
