ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - St. Louis area children could be part of a nationwide COVID vaccine trial.

Washington University and St. Louis Children's Hospital have been asked by two vaccine makers to participate in clinical trials this spring.

Dr. Jason Newland, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Physician, says the group will include children up to 18-years-old and as young as infants. Newland says children with underlying conditions are encouraged to register, "we definitely want children with some of these underlying conditions, like asthma. There are some things that would be potentially be excluded. I think right now what we're hoping for is just to get a list of all the people that might be interested."

He says part of the group chosen will be given two doses, another portion a placebo. Newland says they are hoping to enroll several hundred children in the trial that's expected to begin in March or April.
