ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden released a statement following the guilty verdicts for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin who killed George Floyd last year.

Hayden called the jury's decisions "appropriate and proper," in finding the defendant guilty of all three counts he faced: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

He says if Chauvin would have simply checked if Floyd was able to breath and readjusted his position, "he would not have died, the nation if not the world would not have erupted in protest and we would not have needed to brace ourselves for today's verdicts."

The St. Louis Police Headquarters downtown is currently protected by concrete barricades on the east and west sides of the building on Olive Street.
