SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - At the same time St. Louis Police were enforcing a new youth curfew over the holiday weekend, they were trying to bust up an advertised street takeover. "It had been shared thousands of times, we were gathering intelligence that people from across the country were going to be coalescing on St. Louis to engage in this street takeover," explains Mitch McCoy, Director of Public Affairs and Information for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
McCoy tells KMOX's Total Information AM, special enforcement units blocked participants in South City near Hampton and Jamieson. McCoy says it was primarily older teens and young adults. "They were offering cash incentives to engage in violence against police officers and also cash incentives to block responding police officers from interrupting these takeovers."
Nine adults were arrested, nine vehicles seized, and four juveniles were taken to a reunification center for their parents to pick them up. Police say they also confiscated two firearms -- one was adapted to be fully automatic.
Meanwhile, more than three dozen juveniles were taken into custody by St. Louis Police on the first weekend of an expanded curfew. McCoy says 2 juveniles were detained July 3rd. 41 juveniles were picked up by police on July 4th. The majority were from outside St. Louis City.
Eight were found in possession of illegal fireworks. The teens were taken to a reunification center. Parents or guardians were required to pick them up and receive citations.
The expanded youth curfew is in effect through Labor Day.
