ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The rules have changed for St. Louis voters heading to the polls Tuesday. An all-new system for how to pick a mayor or alderman awaits them.
Starting Tuesday, they can pick more than one candidate for each office.
"Lots of times you look at two candidates for mayor and say 'Gosh, I agree with a lot of what both of them are saying. What should I do?'" Kathleen Ferrell with the League of Women Voters says. "What you should do on March 2 is vote for both of them."
The top two vote-getters in any race would then face each other in the April runoff election. Supporters say it's a fair way to prevent mayors from winning with just 30% of the vote.
Critics say it's a system designed to give Progressives a second chance to win, designed after Tishaura Jones lost in the last primary by just 800 votes. And they say it would unfairly make aldermen who beat their sole opponent in March have to run all over again in April.
