St. Louis recently saw a big win in an important industry.
Out of more than 500 applicants for a federal grant called the "Build Back Better Regional Challenge," St. Louis was chosen to get $25 million to develop advanced manufacturing as an industry cluster.
Manufacturing used to be the major employer in St. Louis, and the region does still make Chevy trucks and Boeing fighter jets. The grant aims to create a hub to help inventors get started, as well as getting companies to use new tech to manufacture here, and training so they have enough workers.
The goal is to add advanced manufacturing to bioscience and geospatial, two of St. Louis' other tech competencies.
Greater St. Louis Inc. noted that this was a combined application from all 15 area counties, with contributions from institutions in St. Charles to Jefferson to Madison counties. Only 3.9% of the proposals were chosen.
