Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush has a challenger who claims she's "too much of an activist" and "not willing to compromise" to get legislation passed to help the district. Missouri State Senator Steve Roberts is running in the Democratic primary against Bush.
"Politics right now is too hostile," Roberts said. "We can't have folks who are taking this all-or-nothing approach. You need people to work together to help their communities."
Roberts also says Bush is "hypocritical" when it comes to public safety.
"She spends almost half a million dollars on her personal security," he said. "And this is someone who's calling to defund the police when we're facing a plague of gun violence."
Bush previously responded to this claim, which Roberts is not the first to make. She said she has received death threats and that without security, she believes she could be killed.
"And we're also talking about the same exact people who say horrible things about me, who lie to build up their base. And then because they lie about me, I receive death threats," Bush told CBS last year.
Bush also says her strong positions are informed by her background as a Ferguson protestor, which taught her what ideas are worth fighting for.
Roberts started his career as a state legislator in 2017, first as a representative and then as a senator. He has faced some criticism after being accused of sexual assault, which he denies, and after voting for some anti-abortion bills.
The primary is set for August 2nd.
