WENTZVILLE, Mo. (KMOX) - A student is in police custody after being caught with an unloaded handgun and ammunition in his backpack at Holt High School in the Wentzville School District.

The district posted a message on Facebook about the Tuesday morning incident, explaining that police were called after another Holt student alerted a staff member that a student may have a weapon in their vehicle.

The student was found in the building with "an unloaded handgun, along with a magazine with one round of ammunition, in his backpack." The post says the student was taken into custody and the school day is continuing.

"Weapons of any kind are not permitted on school property and we take these matters very seriously," the post states. "We want to assure you that safety is always our number one concern and we are grateful to the student who notified staff: they did exactly what we ask of students - if you see something or hear something that is a concern, say something. We are also grateful to our Holt administrators and law enforcement for the quick and safe resolution."
