ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Missouri teachers are not ok, according to a new survey.

The new survey showed some overwhelming findings about the profession, with as many as 70% teachers have found to have considered leaving the profession, out of 2,300 respondents.

"It's a number we have looked at for a number of years," said Todd Fuller, the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Missouri State Teacher's Association. "It's a question we have asked in the past and this year."

Fuller says that while the number has been in line with what has been previously found over the years, the responses have changed over the last two years.

"I think most people would assume lack of pay, but that's not necessarily the highest reason," said Fuller. "The top two that are tied at 63% are stress and student behavior and that is indictive of the anecdotal information we've heard from our members over the last year."

Fuller says teachers are spending more time getting students to a state where they can learn, rather than actually teaching them.

"I think the challenge has been dealing with situations that are different for classroom management then they were two years ago," said Fuller. "One of the most telling comments from one of our members was that students have less coping strategies then they used too."
