More than three thousand vials of liquid fentanyl have been stolen from SSM Health St. Clare Hospital in Fenton. The drug — almost two gallons worth of it — went missing alongside more than 700 vials of Midazolam from the hospital's radiology unit.

The incident happened last year between February and June, and was the subject of a complaint the hospital filed with the state. The complaint said that the Drug Enforcement Administration had been informed, one nurse was fired, and there was an "ongoing investigation into others with the IVR department."

The fired nurse died in October, and his attorney tells KMOX he had admitted to taking some of the drugs, but insisted he wasn't responsible for everything that went missing — he said there was a larger problem.

The DEA declined to comment on the situation. KMOX is awaiting a comment from the Fenton hospital about what they're doing to fix the problem.
