The former President caused some confusion yesterday when he announced his endorsement in Missouri's U.S. Senate race.
Donald Trump sent out a post on his social media site, Truth Social, on Monday, where he said he'd announce his endorsement later that evening. When the email came, it said he endorsed "ERIC." Which left many Missourians wondering: Which one?
Trump hasn't specified whether he meant to endorse former Governor Eric Greitens, or Attorney General Eric Schmitt, or Eric McElroy. Schmitt and Greitens both took to Twitter to claim Trump's endorsement and thank him for it.
Jeff Smith, former state Senator for Missouri, said he thinks he has an idea of what Trump was thinking when he left his endorsement vague.
"I think we know that it was on purpose. This is not an oversight. He was getting pressure from people in both camps who are in his inner circle," Smith said. "Trump's endorsements are not really about the candidates. They're about Trump."
Smith said that though Trump was probably getting a lot of pressure from the Greitens campaign, he probably thought Schmitt was going to win -- and he wanted to look good.
Smith said that looking at the race, he believes the most likely Republican nominee for Senate is Schmitt.
