ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis advocates are going to Washington D.C. again next week to push for help for those injured by nuclear waste that was dumped in the region after the Manhattan Project.
Just Moms STL's Dawn Chapman said she hopes to have a word with U.S. Senator Mitt Romney after he said he opposed extending compensation to St. Louisans and he'd rather "reserve the money for those determined to actually be suffering".
"It's one of those horrific comments that makes you cry. But then at the end of the day, you use it, and it gains sympathy," Chapman said. "I think at the end of the day when we get there next week to D.C., we're going to find a lot more sympathetic senators based on his comment."
The radiation compensation act has already passed the Senate, now it needs approval from the House. Chapman said she wonders if Congresswoman Ann Wagner is still advocating for it.
