The grand opening Saturday (August 15) of Uhuru Bakery & Cafe in the College Hill neighborhood is being celebrated as a major step in the revitalization of the West Florissant corridor, now referred to by some as the Uhuru District.
Bakari Olatunji says Uhuru is Swahili for freedom and the Uhuru movement is about Black self-determination and economic self-reliance.
"The neighborhood has already started to transform," says Olatunji. "We have an initiative here where we have a farm, we have a community garden, we have an event center, we have a community center, we have a basketball court, we have a workforce independence program all along this corridor here. "

Uhuru Bakery has sold pies at the Soulard Farmer's Market for several years.
This Saturday's grand opening celebration runs from 12 to 5 p.m. featuring speakers, music, free samples, pies for sale, Uhuru's jerk chicken sandwiches and more. Location: 3719 W. Florissant Avenue.
