A University City High School student has died after being accidentally stabbed with a pair of scissors during class earlier this month, the School District of University City and University City police said Tuesday.
It happened October 5th, when the student suffered a puncture wound to his upper chest during class. The injury prompted a lockdown at the school. The district's lead nurse and first responders treated the student on site before he was taken to a local hospital for further treatment.
Officials confirmed Tuesday that the student died from his injuries.
"We are heartbroken to confirm that the student passed away from his injuries today," the district and police department said in a joint statement. "The School District and the University City Police Department extend our deepest condolences to the student's family, loved ones, and school community during this extraordinarily difficult time."
The school district and the University City Police Department's Bureau of Investigation conducted separate investigations. No foul play is suspected, and officials say all relevant individuals have been interviewed. The student's identity has not been released out of respect for the family's privacy.
The district says crisis counseling and mental health support services are available at all district schools for any student or staff member who needs them. Additional counselors and wellness resources will be available at University City High School.
