LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - It's a close call caught on tape.
Lake St. Louis Police this morning posted on Facebook, the dash cam video of a car hitting a police car stopped on the shoulder of I-70 near Bryan Road last month, sending sparks and debris flying.
Lt. Pat Doering tells KMOX no one was hurt in that instance, but it's a reminder of the importance of the Move Over law.
"That's why they created this law, because we've had so many accidents" says Doering. "Not only police officers, MoDOT workers getting struck just because people aren't even slowing down. That's the purpose of the law is, number one: slow down, number two: if it's safe to move over so that way we give a buffer in case there are people working and we don't know what's going on there."
Doering says his department has had five vehicles hit over the last 20 years, fortunately only one officer has suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, Illinois officials report that the number of vehicles hit by violators of Scott's Law, Illinois' version of the law, has dropped from 25 last year to 15 so far this year. One officer was killed last year. Two have been hurt in 2020.
