ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden says a 32-year-old police officer was shot in the neck while responding to a disturbance call in the 1600 block of North Broadway, Wednesday night.
He says the officer's injuries are non-life threatening, but a projectile from a rifle was removed from the officer's neck.
Hayden says officers "are being attacked trying to do their jobs on several instances this Summer and this is the 10th officer that's been struck by gunfire. Very disturbing that officers can't merely do their job without coming under gunfire. I've been on the department for 34 years, there's never been a time when officers just merely going on a call. They hadn't confronted anybody, the sentiment is that hey, officers can be shot at."
The officer has been on the department two years. There was standoff at the shooting location, but at the time of this writing, Hayden did not know if that was the suspect that shot the officers. The incident was still evolving.
