The Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis
The Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis has been the voice for economic self-reliance, social equality, and civil rights since the Urban League began after the 1917 East Saint Louis race riots. Today, Saint Louis is the largest affiliate within the National Urban League Movement, serving an average of more than 150,000 residents annually.
The mission of the Urban League is to empower African Americans and others in securing economic self-reliance, social equality, and civil rights – offering diverse programs to help stabilize families within the community.
As the champions of empowerment and opportunity for African Americans, the Urban League envisions a region where all people …
Are valued members of the community.
Can adequately support their families.
Can live in neighborhoods that are vibrant and thriving.
Each of the 55 programs provided by the Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis are supported by four pillars of service:
Economic Opportunity – creating ‘ladders out of poverty’.
Educational Excellence – providing access to quality education.
Community Empowerment – providing a social safety net to stabilize families.
Civil Rights and Advocacy – advocating for fair and equal treatment.
As the Urban League has grown, the need for a more efficient service hub has become more urgent. The recent move to the 205,000-square foot Victor Roberts Building (the old Sears Building) allows the Urban League to create a one-stop service center, while anchoring a neighborhood that has too-long been neglected. In 2021 alone, over 195,000 clients were served.
