How difficult is it to be a pedestrian in the city of St Louis?

We wanted to get a perspective about the safety of walking, biking and transit in St Louis, so we invited Brian Adler to come to the KMOX Studio downtown. Adler and his wife moved here from Los Angeles 8 years ago, and don't own a car. Brian is a PhD Student in Public and Social Policy at St. Louis University and an adjunct Professor at UMSL.

To get to the KMOX Studio at Park Pacific, Adler took the train. We asked if he feels safe on Metrolink. "I do. I absolutely do," he said.

When he got to downtown though, he was a bit surprised, "when I crossed Tucker at Olive there was not a single pedestrian button and barely a crosswalk at all despite it being the intersection of two major roadways in our city's downtown."

Adler has tweeted about being a biker and taking public transit.

Adler bikes a lot but says he has to be careful. "I try to stick to the residential streets. I don't risk my life by biking down Grand or Kingshighway because it's simply too scary which means you're spending a whole lot of extra time looking for a safe corridor."
