AFFTON, MO (KMOX) - If you have a kid who plays hockey you've probably replaced some broken sticks over the years. Now what's broken is being brought together to bring hope to a grieving family and hockey club.

The Affton Americans Hockey Club is creating a new space in the Affton Ice Rink to honor #72, 16-year-old Colin Brown, who was killed by a stray bullet nearly a year ago, as he and his dad drove along I-55 on their way back from a hockey game. It will include a wall crafted entirely of well-loved hockey sticks used by players from across the region.

"It's going to be a space to bring people together," explains Affton Americans Board Member Julie Jordan speaking on KMOX's Total Information AM, "and that was actually a space that brought the teams together when we found out about the tragedy. We all grouped up and met in that room the next day to support each other, so it seemed like the best place to honor him and continue that support."

You can take broken or used sticks to the Affton Ice Rink at 10300 Gravois Road. There's a container in the warming room. "And we're asking that if players or parents are donating those sticks," adds Jordan, "they're able to write a message on it the family, the community, to future hockey players."

Jordan says it speaks to the strength of the St. Louis youth hockey community. "I think it's overwhelming to see groups and groups of people who have never met, who may have been rivals, who may have played games against each other, who call come together to become a family."
