ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A family of five had to be rescued from their vehicle after a 20-inch water main broke near I-70 and Bircher Blvd. in north St. Louis Friday night, sending a foot-and-a-half of water onto the highway.
"A family was in one of the cars, so we had to wade into the water and assist them out," says Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson. Several other vehicles also got stuck in the water.
Jenkerson says it was a dangerous situation. "It's very difficult to see that type of issue on the highway at night," he says. "You're coming around a turn or coming over the hill and all of a sudden you hit a foot-and-a-half of water, that's really, really dangerous."
The highway was closed for several hours while city water department crews shut off the main and the water dissipated. No one was hurt. The cause of the break isn't known yet.
