Drivers all around St. Louis have been complaining lately about debris on the roads -- some KMOX listeners mentioned seeing things like tires and trash cans, and wonder what's being done about the issue.
MoDOT's District Engineer, Tom Blair, joined Total Information AM to discuss how they've been managing the situation.
"We were so picking up trash and debris. And I can measure it in tons and number of hours that we pick it up all that kind of stuff," Blair said. "And it looks like at this point in the year, that we're picking up more tonnage and spending more hours on it. And there's still more of that out there."
He said it's MoDOT's responsibility to take care of debris on the roads, but that it's not MoDOT workers who are causing the problem. He said it's often motorists with unsecured loads or people throwing trash out their car windows.
"It is illegal. But we all understand that our law enforcement partners have a lot on their plate," he said. "So it's hard for them to prioritize, you know, litter, amongst all the other things that they need to enforce."
