Many businesses have been facing a worker shortage during the pandemic. And now, one global footwear company based in Clayton is experiencing a new phenomenon. Parents have been applying for jobs at Caleres, seeking full-time pay for part-time work.
Caleres Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Amy Hunter told KMOX that parents have been turning down full-time work and benefits partially because it left their kids with no one to pick them up after school.
"I got a lot of feedback from people that after school care is hard to come by," she said. "And it seems to be a problem, not just for St. Louis, but nationwide."
Hunter said most of the 13,000 jobs at Calares require a body present in the building, which makes it difficult for them to allow people to leave before quitting time.
"As a single mom of four, I was trying to be empathetic, but we're struggling a little bit. I've worked full time, my whole adult life and I figured it out," Hunter added. "And no, all four kids weren't always at the same school. And I still figured it out and built relationships with other moms or you know, the YMCA usually has an after school program, or I swapped with another mom."
Finding childcare isn't always an easy (or affordable) task, and many parents are desperate for work that fits their schedule, especially amid rising inflation. But still, Hunter maintains that parents should be able to manage a full-time job.
