Mississippians on Tuesday approved the new state flag design, officially closing the book on the state flag that featured the Confederate battle emblem.

The state had already decided to retire the former flag, the last in the south with the blue cross and 13 stars set across a red field:

The new flag features an image of a magnolia, the state flower, with red, blue, and gold colors and the words "In God We Trust."

It was the only design on the ballot. Voters were asked to choose either "yes" or "no." Had the nays won, then the process for a new design would have started over.

Last June, Mississippi lawmakers decided to change the flag's design, under pressure from groups including the Southeastern Conference and Southern Baptists.
