KANSAS CITY – Missouri teachers aren’t happy with the state of the state’s education system.
A survey of more than 2,300 Missouri teachers found that more than 70% have seriously considered leaving education. In addition, more than 80% know of someone who already has left the profession.
Todd Fuller with the Missouri State Teachers Association says political debate and anger surrounding public school education and curriculum is often directed toward teachers, who he says are simply advocates for kids’ education.
Another major concern? Teachers say they’re spending more time on simple problem solving skills, instead of the daily lesson.
Deteriorating student behavior is also a top concern for Missouri teachers, which Fuller says may be, at least in part, an unintended consequence of the pandemic.
Fuller says now more than ever, teachers need empathy and more - or more quality educators will leave the profession forever.
