ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Officials at Fort Leonard Wood say they're investigating the death of a soldier as a homicide.

23-year-old Sergeant Sarah Roque went missing Monday and her body later discovered in a dumpster on the base. She was assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion.

Army Special Agent John McCabe say investigators do have a person of interest and they have been taken into custody.

"I can tell you a this point, efforts are made to make sure to make sure this individual does not pose any threat to the base or the community," said McCabe. "We are confident that there is no threat to the community or base personnel at this point."

Major General Christopher Beck says that person nor any other poses a broader threat.

"Fort Leonard Wood is a safe place to live and work," said Beck. "We have a strong command climate focused on engaged leadership that ensures everyone is treated with dignity and respect."

Roque hailed from Indiana and worked as a dog handler in the K-9 attachment.

Roque enlisted in 2020, and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood. Sgt. Roque’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

The League of United Latin American Citizens says it will help with the case - as it has in two other incidents involving Hispanic women in the Army who were murdered.

Army investigators aren't releasing any more information at this point, including the cause of Roque's death.
