A 15-foot reticulated python caused a stir in a Garland neighborhood Tuesday evening after it was spotted moving through yards and trapping a man on top of his truck.

Garland Animal Services responded to multiple calls reporting a large snake on Oakleaf Trail, near Centerville Road. The reptile was seen coiling in one yard before making its way toward a parked vehicle, where a man took refuge on the roof to avoid contact with the snake.

Animal control officers arrived shortly after and were able to safely capture the python using specialized equipment. The massive snake, estimated to weigh around 100 pounds, was transported to a city facility where it is being held as a stray.

Officials later determined the snake is a pet, though the owner has not been publicly identified. The circumstances surrounding its escape remain under investigation, including whether it was being kept legally under Garland’s exotic animal regulations.

The python will remain in the city's custody for a short holding period in case the owner comes forward with proper documentation. If unclaimed, it will be transferred to a licensed exotic animal rescue organization.

No injuries were reported, but the incident disrupted the typically quiet residential block and drew significant attention from neighbors and passersby. Reticulated pythons, while non-venomous, are among the largest snake species in the world and can pose risks due to their strength and constricting behavior.

City officials are reminding residents that exotic pet owners are responsible for ensuring their animals are safely contained to avoid public safety risks.
