Police in Georgia shared on Saturday that officers engaged and shot a 17-year-old boy who allegedly killed a police dog and pointed his gun at officers.

Clayton County Police Department Assistant Chief Bruce Parks shared the news during a press conference on Saturday.

The shooting occurred at around 2 a.m. in Jonesboro, Georgia, located 17 miles south of Atlanta, Parks said.

The Jonesboro Police Department was responding to suspicious activity involving three males at a hotel, a press release from the department shared.

When officers made contact with the suspects, all three fled, resulting in a chase that saw two of them caught and taken into custody, Parks shared.

In their search for the third suspect, the Jonesboro Police Department reached out to the Clayton County Police Department for assistance.

Clayton County police Capt. John Ivey said that shortly after, police dispatched a police K-9 unit, which helped locate the third male in a nearby wooded area.

Ivey said that police commanded the suspect to come out, but the teen allegedly produced a handgun and began firing instead, with one bullet hitting the police dog.

The dog was transported to a local animal hospital. Police shared that it later died from its injuries.

A perimeter was set up to contain the suspect, and after several hours, the suspect was located again, with police telling him to drop his weapon, Clayton County police shared.

However, the suspect allegedly pointed his firearm at officers, who then opened fire, striking and killing him, police shared.

No officers or civilians were injured during this incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into the shooting.
