Last month, as COVID-19 cases were rising due to the omicron variant, only 22% of Americans felt that the virus was "completely" or "mostly" under control and 41% said it was "not at all" under control.
Now, as cases have declined and some states are beginning to end restrictions and mandates, 36% of American voters believe that COVID-19 is "completely" or "mostly" under control, according to the latest Fox News poll.
It's the highest percentage recorded since May of 2021, when 46% of Americans thought that the virus was "completely" or "mostly" under control. At that time it appeared to be declining throughout the country and more people began to get vaccinated. There were only 29,050 new cases on May 15, 2021 with a 7-day average of 33,840 cases.
COVID-19 has not completely disappeared in the Unites States, as there were 73,392 new cases on Feb. 24 with a 7-day average of 74,100 cases.
Although, that's a massive decline from Jan. 13 when there were 869,415 new COVID-19 cases throughout the country after the holiday season with a 7-day average of 802,191 cases.
The poll showed that 43% of people currently believe that the virus is just "somewhat" under control, while only 19% think it's "not at all" under control. In May of 2021, those numbers were similar, as 44% said "somewhat" under control and 10% said "not at all" under control.
The latest Fox News national survey also showed that just more than half of registered voters believe it's time to remove mask mandates for employees and customers in restaurants and businesses. 53% of people said yes, while 44% wanted to keep mask mandates for now.
As for schools requiring students to continue wearing masks, 50% of registered voters said they can end the mandate and 46% said students should keep wearing masks.
Even though more than half of registered voters in the survey believed you shouldn't have to wear a mask to go to a restaurant anymore, more people still wanted them to be required for travel.
Only 39% said mask mandates for air and train travel are still needed, and a majority 58% of people still wanted mask mandates for travel to be in place.
