If you received multiple emails from Amazon this weekend thanking you for a gift card purchase you didn’t make, you’re not alone.
"Hundreds" of customers took to social media to say they received emails from Amazon on Saturday about purchases of Google Play, Mastercard and Hotels.com gift cards they did not make, Business Insider reported.
Interestingly, the emails also contained a warning about gift card scams with a link for more information.
"There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards from well-known brands. To learn more about some common scam attempts that may involve asking for payment using gift cards please click on the button below," the email said.
Although the emails appeared to come from a legitimate source, store-news@amazon.com, customers found no evidence of gift card purchases in their Amazon Prime accounts. Many customers became worried their accounts were compromised or their personal information was exposed.
Several hours after the emails were sent out, Amazon customer service reps reassured customers their accounts were safe, saying the entire thing was a mistake.
"An error in our system resulted in an order confirmation email being sent to customers who did not purchase a gift card," an Amazon spokesperson told CNBC. "We are emailing these customers to inform them of the error and apologize for the inconvenience."
