An American woman and man from Belize were left dead last week after an apparent dispute among drug dealers that led to shots being fired in the Mexican resort city of Tulum, officials shared Sunday.
The woman has not been identified, but prosecutors for the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo stressed that she was not involved or connected to the alleged drug dealer also killed, CBS News reported.
The United States embassy has not yet commented on the situation.
Officials shared that the woman may have simply been caught in the crossfire between the two parties shooting, as prosecutors denied reports from the local media that said the two victims were a couple.
Prosecutors said that the dead man was holding cocaine and pills when he was killed and was believed to be a dealer. The suspects in the shooting have been identified and are still being sought by authorities.
The US State Department has an active travel alert for Mexico, warning those traveling to the country to “exercise increased situational awareness,” especially after dark at Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts.
